Our Mission: To provide a fun and safe environment for young cyclists to develop skills and passion that last a lifetime.
Our History: The Crested Butte Development Team was established in 2015 by Amy and Mike Nolan, inspired by the Durango DEVO riders around a campfire at the 2014 12 Hours of Mesa Verde race. Our mission was clear from the very beginning, fun and safety first, skills second, and performance third. This theory, shared by our friends at Durango DEVO, supports that if young riders are having fun, feel safe, and experience process-based skills development, the results will follow. Further, in line with our mission, is that this fun and safe environment ultimately leads to a lifelong passion on two wheels. Podiums are fleeting, making memories with friends on amazing trails in the mountains and accomplishing epic challenges last a lifetime.
For the past decade, Crested Butte Devo has relentlessly strived to be an organization rooted in community and positive youth development. From our Junior Coach Program to our unwavering commitment to our Life Skills On and Off the Bike curriculum, we take our impact very seriously. Crested Butte Devo has sustainably grown from 66 riders and 11 coaches in 2015 to a team of over 200 riders and 30 coaches. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to engage with our local families, and we sincerely value the support of our community partners. It is a privilege to be able to share our joy for mountain biking with the next generation and we believe that riding bikes truly makes the world a better place.
Cheers to the next decade, and beyond.
Why we do what we do: Because riding bikes is FUN and we want to share our passion for it with anybody and everybody we can. Our focus is building a love of the sport for kids, those who can then have it as a lifelong activity themselves, championing it to their friends and families as one of the best ways to move your body, free your mind, and connect with the great outdoors. We firmly believe that using a bicycle as our teaching tool we have the ability to help our valley’s youth become passionate about their health, both physical and mental, the importance of spending time outdoors, away from technology and alongside friends, and that the oft used theory of “sport as a metaphor for life” truly applies. Through sport we help teach our athletes how to overcome challenges and obstacles, working collaboratively with teammates, and navigating the required relationships to do so with coach-mentors in place to assist. They learn the importance of hard work, dedication, incremental growth, goal setting, and how to manage setbacks along the way. In summary, we truly love getting kids on bikes and helping them become better people as they grow up because of it.
